After School Provision & Homework in the Prep School

Late Stay - 7 to 9 Year Olds (Shell, Years 3 and 4)

In Shell, there is late stay provision on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3.20-5.00pm. Pupils are provided with a snack and drink whilst they relax with about twenty minutes of television. At 4.15pm the pupils settle down for a half hour prep session.

On Wednesdays, the late stay is until 5.00pm, so the pupils have an opportunity to have their snack and drink only.

Saturdays have an earlier finish for Shell at 12.25pm, so there is no late stay provision.

Late Stay - 9 to 13 Year Olds (Years 5 to 8)

From Form One (Year 5) to Upper Third (Year 8), there is late stay on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5.00-6.00pm.  Pupils who know that they are not being collected at 5.00pm go straight to the Late Stay room where they are supervised by a member of staff and can do their prep.

Should parents/guardians need to contact the member of staff in charge of Late Stay, the number is  07483 064426.

Homework

7 to 9 Year Olds (Shell, Years 3 and 4)

In Shell, the pupils have Homework/Prep as follows:

Shell pupils are set homework for Mathematics and English each week. They may also have a Big Write topic to discuss. These are set on days dependent on the timetable each year, and parents will be informed of this at the start of the year. In line with the rest of Prep School, Homework/Prep should last 30 minutes, including a daily 10 minutes reading session with an adult. On evenings where no formal Prep is set, pupils are encouraged to spend some time practising their number bonds, times tables or spellings, or working on the website 'Mathletics', to which all pupils in Shell are subscribed. Parents are asked to sign their child's homework and write how long it took them. This enables staff to ensure that the amount of work given is appropriate.

9 to 13 Year Olds (Years 5 to 8)

Homework/Prep for Form 1 to Upper Third pupils is set for the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science (or Chemistry, Biology and Physics as appropriate for year group)
  • French
  • History
  • Geography
  • RE
  • German
  • Spanish

Each homework should last around 30 minutes. The homework is set as an extension or reinforcement of the lesson, or as a preparation for the next lesson. We do not set arbitrary exercises for the sake of setting homework. The homework is an important part of pupils’ learning and informs teachers’ planning.

The details of homework / prep are available from the link below, they are also written in the back of the exercise book in which that homework is to be done or on the VLE.
