Academic

We will support you to develop independent learning skills. You’ll have 12 lessons per fortnight in each subject, with a further four to six hours per subject, per week outside of lessons in independent study: this will be a combination of set homework, consolidation, and wider reading.

You’ll be treated as an adult in the classroom, but with plenty of opportunity for teacher support; one-to-one or as part of an academic clinic. You will also have an Academic Tutor who will meet with you once a week to oversee your progress through the Sixth Form.

Academic clinics are run at lunchtime and offer you additional, tailored support and feedback in your chosen subjects to maximise your potential.

You will be timetabled into our Examination Practice programme, which runs across the two years and provides you with exposure to writing academic assessments in examination conditions and supports you with planning your revision.

If English isn’t your first language, you’ll get plenty of support from our English for Speakers of Other Languages team who will help you to prepare you for IELTS and Cambridge International exams.

As a Lower Sixth student, you are offered a unique opportunity to delve deeply into a subject of your choice with the EPQ, fostering independent research skills and critical thinking. Worth half an A Level, the EPQ allows you to explore a topic beyond the standard curriculum, encouraging self-directed learning, IT proficiency, presentation skills and more.

Alongside your A Levels, during your time in the Sixth you will have the opportunity to study French, German, or Spanish as an AS qualification.

Studying a Modern Foreign Language offers numerous benefits beyond the classroom and can significantly enhance your academic and professional prospects. It improves cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving skills, memory, and critical thinking, as well as bringing additional exposure to different cultures.

Academic clubs and societies, which are student led, provide many opportunities to extend your learning far beyond the limits of the A Level curriculum. With over 20 different academic clubs and societies to choose from, you will have the chance to enter subject Olympiads, compete in Rotary Club competitions and more – all building your supra-curricular profile.

Our Scholars Programme will hone your critical thinking skills (important for university entrance tests) and introduce you to university-style seminars from subject experts.
