On Monday we were delighted to welcome a group of Ukrainian teachers and students to the College to discuss their charity, SavED.

Our visitors joined our Lower and Upper Third assembly with Olena, Director of SavED, discussing the organisation and its role to rebuilding war damaged schools in Ukraine, and helping the youth of Ukraine to become change makers for the future.

This month, SavED is launching a new documentary called We Are U. The short film (55 minutes) details the ways young Ukrainian teenagers are living out their dreams for a brighter future. Alongside Olena and four inspirational young people, our pupils and staff also met two of the mentors who are supporting the young people; one of whom was chosen as a ‘Teacher of the Year’ in Ukraine before the war, and Andrii, Headteacher of a now destroyed Senior School in Mariupol.

The documentary highlighted five young ‘superheroes’, one of whom was Myroslava, a student from Kakhovka. Myroslava was introduced to our Lower and Upper Third pupils, spoke about her life since the war began, how she now lives in Germany, and her wish to return to Ukraine to work as an environmental scientist.

Following the presentation, the floor was open for our pupils to ask questions.

A tour of the College was next for our visitors, during which they met Mr Toleman, Head of the Prep School, several other key members of staff, explored our grounds and received gifts to take back to the newly established temporary schools and learning shelters in Ukraine.
