Upper Sixth Former, Mabel Reid, is not only captain of our first ever 1st XI female cricket team, but she is also our first ever female captain of our boys’ 1st XI cricket team.

Mabel, who has been playing cricket since the age of nine, has played for our boys’ 1st XI cricket team for the last two seasons and is one of our leading cricketers at the College. Outside of the College, Mabel plays for the Bishop’s Stortford Women’s Cricket Club, is captain of the U18 Hertfordshire women’s cricket team, and is also in the Sunriser’s Academy regional team.

On being selected to captain the boys’ and girls’ 1st XI teams, Mabel commented, “I was honoured and surprised to find out I was captain of the boys’ first team side; however, I hope that it shows the girls in the younger years that they have the capability to play at the same standard as the boys and potentially play in the first team one day.”

Head of Cricket, Dave Hughes, commented, “It is indeed a magnificent achievement for Mabel to be the first female captain of the 1st XI boys’ team. Her knowledge of the game, ability, and her experience playing county cricket made her the standout candidate for the role and it is one that she should be incredibly proud of, as we as a school should be.

On Thursday 18 April, Mabel also captained our first ever girls’ 1st XI match, against local pupils from Haileybury school. Mabel commented, “It is an achievement in itself to get a team of girls together and compete against strong teams such as Haileybury, and I felt very proud to captain the side which has a lot of potential in future years.” With several young players on the team, it was a fantastic opportunity for Mabel to captain the match as a role model for the other players to aspire to.

Beyond the College Mabel hopes to obtain a professional contract with the Sunrisers’ senior team, possibly in the Hundred, and continue playing cricket with her Bishop’s Stortford and Hertfordshire teammates.
