In a moment of deep pride and heartfelt recognition, we were delighted to officially named a pitch at Witherden Field in honour of staff member, Paul Bashford, affectionately known to all as ‘Bash’. This tribute marks a significant milestone in the College’s sporting history, celebrating Bash whose contribution to sport and school life has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Paul’s journey with the College began as a pupil, where he distinguished himself as a talented cricketer, particularly excelling as a wicketkeeper. His passion for sport never waned, and he returned to the College to dedicate his professional life to coaching and mentoring generations of pupils. Whether on the rugby pitch, hockey field, or cricket square, Paul has been a constant presence—his energy, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment setting the standard for all who follow.

More than a coach, Paul is part of the very DNA of Bishop’s Stortford College. His influence extends far beyond the scoreboard. He has inspired countless pupils through his integrity, humour, and relentless pursuit of excellence. His ability to connect with pupils and staff alike has made him a beloved figure across the College community.

The naming ceremony was a fitting tribute, attended by Old Stortfordians, parents and the current 1st XI as well as Paul’s family—his wife Kerry, mother Pauline, and son Sam—who looked on with immense pride as Paul received this well-deserved honour. Their presence underscored the deep personal and professional legacy Paul has built over the years.

Adding to the poignancy of the occasion, Nigel Witherden, the former College groundsman and namesake of Witherden Field, spoke warmly about Paul’s impact. It was a symbolic passing of the torch from one College legend to another, uniting two figures who have each shaped the landscape—literally and figuratively—of sport at the College.

The newly named pitch stands as a lasting tribute to Paul Bashford’s decades of service, passion, and excellence. It will serve as a daily reminder to all who play there of the values he embodies: dedication, humility, and love for the game.

We thank Paul—coach, mentor, colleague, and friend—for everything he has given to the College. This honour is richly deserved.
