Bishop’s Stortford College Lower Sixth (Year 12) student, Olivia Court, clinched the first prize at the inaugural Royal Institute (RI) Coronation Award 2024 competition, in celebration of the coronation of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours’ honourary member, His Majesty King Charles III.

Made aware of the competition by Bishop’s Stortford College Senior School Head of Art, Charlotte Munck, Olivia was encouraged to submit a watercolour piece she had completed at her leisure, in a similar style to her work and chosen theme for her GCSE studies, titled ‘Flowers Jars’. Open to pupils across the country aged 11 to 18, Olivia was one of 40 finalists.

Judged by three prominent members of the RI, including RI President, Chris Myers, Olivia was subsequently awarded first prize, winning £300. Olivia was presented with her award and certificate by broadcaster and journalist, Jon Snow, at the official opening of the 212th Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the Mall Galleries, London, where her work was exhibited from 28 March to 13 April 2024.

On winning the prize, Olivia commented, “I felt so honoured, but of course a little nervous too, to receive the prize. I never expected to win anything, but I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to enter and thankful that Miss Munck encouraged me to submit my work. I feel so privileged to have had the chance to be involved in the wider world of art and see the paintings of so many talented artists whom I aspire to.”

Head of Senior School Art at the College, Charlotte Munck, commented, “I had the pleasure of attending the prize-giving ceremony and to marvel at the stunning artworks on display. Olivia’s talent truly set her apart, and it was wonderful to see her hard work recognised in such a significant way.”

The College would like to extend its congratulations to Olivia on this fantastic achievement.
