As our Upper Sixth (Year 13) students head off on study leave and start their A Level exams, we commemorated their time at the College, with a tree planting ceremony.

Proposed by Environmental Prefect, Shael K, and the 2024-2025 Prefect body, a tree will be planted each year by the Upper Sixth as they leave, to provide a lasting legacy of their time at the College, whilst also benefiting the environment by supporting ecosystems and acting as carbon sinks.

This initiative, which has been funded by all members of the Upper Sixth, also strengthens alumni ties with the College, and will act as a reminder that Old Stortfordians always have permanent presence on College grounds.

Every year, from now on, each cohort of graduates will plant a tree, creating an avenue of trees which can be enjoyed by all visitors to the College.

The tree selected for the ceremony is an Acer Rubrum Fairview Flame (Red Maple), which will grow to over 12 meters in height, with leaves that will turn shades of brilliant red in the autumn.

We look forward to watching as the tree grows and wish our Upper Sixth the best of luck for the future.
