Over the summer break, Upper Sixth pupil, Katya S, won a student scholarship with the prestigious Drawing Matter organisation to attend their Architectural Drawing Summer School.  The annual Summer School, which takes place in Somerset, is designed to give A Level students with an interest in architecture and the built environment an insight into how professional architects record what they see, how this information connects to the buildings they produce, and how the process of drawing can be used to test and develop an idea.

Over the course of a week, students were exposed to conversations and exercises set by many of the leading thinkers in architectural education today. Tuition was led by Andrew Clancy, Professor of Architecture at Kingston University, supported by a team of tutors and experts.

Beating off hundreds of applicants from across the UK, Katya, and 45 other successful students were selected based on their applications, comprising samples of their drawing work as well as a personal statement.

Commenting on her time at the Architectural Drawing Summer School, Katya said, “The experience was extremely beneficial to me. Not only did I learn so much from it, but I have met some amazing people who have similar minds and aspirations. We helped each other and were able to connect on a level that I have never experienced before since I have never met people who were so similar to me. I think I speak for everyone from the summer school when I say that we have all left it feeling extremely inspired by one another and excited for our futures.”

Following her success at the Summer School, Katya is further developing her architectural experience and has been invited to attend a workshop at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
