Lunchtime Recital Bassoon Player

After a two-year absence, the College musicians have been back at Water Lane United Reformed Church for a short series of recitals.

On three Thursday afternoons, a number of our music scholars have been bringing music to the community, showing their impressive performance skills in a wide variety of instruments and ensembles.

On Thursday 24th February, the series kicked off with a concert dedicated to woodwind and brass instruments, with the exception of one performance by Emily H, who started the recital with a delicate and moving rendition of ‘Green Finch and Linnet Bird’ by Stephen Sondheim.

Other notable performers were Fred B, Babafewa A and Anqi H who all played the clarinet and Neve L, Leif W and William C demonstrated great technical and musical ability with the trumpet. Peggy S performed a virtuoso piece on the flute and Edward C concluded the recital with an impressive rendition of ‘Montagues and Capulets’ on the Bassoon.

Thursday 3rd March – Strings, Guitar & Harp

On Thursday 3rd March the lunchtime recital had a focus on string players and various music scholars performed works in the violin, viola, harp, cello and guitar.

Merve O, the only Prep School pupil who took part in this series, and Chloe C delighted us with their harp playing. Ishani M and Theo T played the violin masterfully and Catherine and Thomas W, who are also members of the Piano Trio, performed impressive pieces in the viola and cello. Rosie A, who started the recital with a delightful rendition of ‘How could I ever know’ and Lily-Rose D who played the flute, were the outliers in this string-centric recital that also featured J.P D playing the guitar. The busiest performer on the day was Miss Angela Novy who masterfully accompanied most of the players.

Thursday 10th March – Chamber Music

This year's Lunchtime Recital Series ended with a gorgeous performance from our Chamber Music group. A group of our finest musicians went to down to the centre of Bishop’s Stortford to perform a selection of chamber music works in this beautiful church with deep historic connections to the College.

The Oboe Ensemble, Senior School String Quartet, Piano Trio and Clarinet Ensemble all played with confidence, a variety of repertoire, ranging from Pachelbel, Mozart, Beethoven to contemporary music by C. Grundman and our very own Catherine Wild, who was also leading the Oboe Ensemble.

Many congratulations to all the performers and in particular to the teachers that helped them learn and rehearse the music, Tim Steggals and Charys Green, the new Heads of Strings and Woodwind respectively.
