Top Prizes for Pupils in Rotary Music Competition
It was another notable year for our musicians in the annual Rotary Young Musician Competition, which took place on Saturday 27th April at the College. A record number of musicians took part this year, including more than 120 young participants from local schools. College pupils were represented in most of the 15 categories: Junior, Intermediate and Advanced sections for Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Piano and Vocal categories.
The Memorial Hall, Recital Room and Music Department were in constant use with numerous performances which were judged by three expert musicians: the renowned international concert pianist Florian Mitrea, successful conductor Richard Balcombe and talented composer and pianist Nathan Williamson.
During the evening, the competition final was held in the Memorial Hall. The winners of each category performed once more in front of a large audience and the panel of adjudicators, who were tasked with finding a Young Musician and Young Vocalist of the Year. The College finalists were Rosie A, who was Junior Vocal Winner, Justin Man and Edward C, winners of the Intermediate Piano and Woodwind sections respectively and Emma H and Billianna I who won the Senior Strings and Vocal sections.
The complete list of prizes gained by College pupils is as follows:
- Rosie A – 1st Prize Junior Vocal
- Peggy S and Ishani M – Commended Junior Piano
- Edward C – 1st Prize Intermediate Woodwind
- Charlie E – Runner Up Intermediate Brass
- Justin Man – 1st Prize Intermediate Piano
- Daniel E – Runner Up Senior Piano & Runner Up Senior Brass

Special mentions should go to Rosie A, who was declared Runner Up in the Young Vocalist of the Year category and to Justin Man who was the overall winner of the competition and presented with the trophy of Young Musician of the Year. Justin will now play again in the district final in Chelmsford.
Many congratulations to all who took part in this very worthwhile event and we hope to see even more College musicians entering the competition next year.
