Wonderful Senior School Piano Concert
On Monday 28th January we hosted our annual Senior School Pianists’ Concert in the Memorial Hall. As one of the most versatile and popular instruments, the piano is learnt by a large number of pupils in the Senior School. To give a performing platform to many of our young keyboard players, the Music Department hosts a concert dedicated exclusively to their instrument. All the students that took part have already achieved grade 8 on this instrument (or are playing at that level) and many are working towards a Performance Diploma.
The repertoire in the concert was dominated by two absolute masters of the piano, Chopin and Rachmaninoff, as well as other works by Beethoven, Gershwin, Haydn and Bach. Daniel E started the recital with two song transcriptions for solo piano by George Gershwin, ‘The Man I Love’ and ‘I got Rhythm’, which he played with great sense of swing and energy. Joseph A, Oliver M and Harry H all played works by Rachmaninoff that included the emotionally intense Prelude Op. 32 No. 10, the celebrated C sharp minor Prelude and the song transcription ‘Daisies’.
Panayiota Z and Emma H both performed elegant and virtuoso piano waltzes by Chopin and Inez Parsell also played music from the Polish master, in this case the hauntingly beautiful and ethereal Nocturne in C sharp minor. The only two pieces not chosen from the Romantic Era were played by Charlie E, who displayed mastery of the classical style with his performance of the Sonata in E flat major by Haydn, and Anastasia Z, playing the baroque masterpiece Prelude in C minor, from the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach.
The evening concluded with the grand Polonaise in C sharp minor by Chopin (here is that popular key once more, often featured by piano composers) played by Justin M. With his mastery of the instrument, Justin was able to bring out both the fierce and poetic elements of this work.
Many congratulations to all the players involved in this wonderful evening of piano music!
