History Trenches Challenge

Prep School Trench Building Library Challenge 36 Prep School Library Trench building Challenge 14

There has been a magnificent start to the Library  House Challenge this year  with some amazing model  trenches in commemoration of the centenary of the Great War. These were judged both in terms of design and historical accuracy, and pupils who scored very highly in both of these  aspects were Mina M, Thomas M, Verity B, Henry B, Zubayr P, Olivia S, Imogen C-S, Lola T, Oliver T and Guy V-E. Some of the models were taken to the FLT for the civic lunch on Sunday and the Mayor was so impressed he is investigating if they can be displayed in the Rhodes Centre.

The positions of the Houses at the end of this challenge is

  1. Westfield
  2. Monk Jones
  3. Newbury and
  4. Grimwade

Art Poppy Challenge

Poppy postcard for Art Library House Challenge 2018

The second part of the Library Challenge, the Art Challenge, was judged by Miss Beckley.  The brief for this was to paint a picture of a poppy using any medium, and again many of the poppies were awarded top marks, and if possible we will send these off to the national competition. She has very cleverly combined them into wreaths for each of the Houses, and they are on the glass of the library - please come and have a look.

Congratulations to Monk Jones, the winner of this particular challenge:

  1. Monk Jones
  2. Newbury
  3. Newbury and
  4. Grimwade

House Library Challenge  Book Reviews

As all of our recent Book Club books have been about WW1 the third task in the House Library Challenge was to write a review of these books. Comments from many of these about Armistice Runner, the Form 1/2 Book Club choice, were also relayed back to the author Tom Palmer, when we had a Skype session with him on Friday.

The L3/U3rd book Skylark’s War was also a great hit with its readers, and many pupils commented on the powerful emotional reaction they had to it. Edward C said in his review  “although we get taught about the history of the war in school, we can never really be sure how that affected people’s emotions, except through storytelling, and this book was a perfect example of that”.

The results of this particular challenge are:

in first position Monk Jones, 2nd Westfield, in 3rd place Grimwade and 4th Newbury. However there are still 2 more challenges to be judged, so this could all change!
