U19s in Glanville Cup
The tennis season started after the Easter holidays, with a number of high level matches for our U19 Tennis Squad in the Glanville Cup, as part of the Team Tennis Schools National Championships.
On Wednesday 25th April, the team of Upper 5th pupils enjoyed a successful 2nd Round match against Bancroft's School 2nd Team, winning all of their matches (12 sets to 1) 4 singles and 2 doubles. The weather was extremely difficult to play in, with rain and strong winds as well as sun during the afternoon on courts that were on a large open field with limited shelter from the conditions!
Maxime S played at 1 and won the 1st comfortably but the opposition came back in the 2nd and looked like he would win the match but Maxime managed to regain control and won the Championship tie-break 10-8 in the 3rd set.
Ben won 6-2 6-0 playing well against his tall L6th opponent (all of the opposition were L6th). Tom C had the longest match which was level-pegging all the way and he eventually won 6-4 6-4. Ed H won his match playing some excellent attacking tennis and winning 6-1 6-2.
Maxime and Ben won their doubles 6-4 6-2 which was a good result especially as Maxime got hit in the shoulder earlier in the match! Ed and Tom won their match 6-2 6-1, again hitting some excellent passing shots during the match as well as having some excellent rallies.
On Tuesday 2nd May, the team played the 3rd Round of the competition against a very strong Sandringham team. The boys should be praised for their excellent court conduct, with some fantastic points played and the scores not really doing them justice in a number of cases. The opposition were definitely 'rattled' despite being considerably higher with their ratings. An excellent effort by all! The Player of the Match was Ben H, who picked up the most games and played a good singles and doubles!
The results were:
Maxime S lost 6-0 6-0 at 1
Ben lost 6-2 6-3
Tom C lost 6-1 6-0
Ed H lost 6-2 6-1
In the doubles:
1st Pair: Maxime and Ben lost 6-1 6-3
2nd Pair: Tom and Ed lost 6-1 6-2
