A Celebration of Vocal Music
On Sunday 18th March we held our annual Choral Concert in the Memorial Hall, involving the combined forces of the Senior School Choir, parents and staff accompanied by a professional orchestra. The first half of the recital featured a lovely selection of vocal and choral works by Mozart. Two of them, “Ave Verum” and “Laudate Dominum”, involved the full choir, with the later piece also including a beautiful solo by the soprano Frances Israel. Frances is one of our resident singing teachers and she demonstrated her amazing voice and musical craft in the next piece in the programme, “Exultate Jubilate”. Her vocal delivery showed exquisite tonal control and a thrilling sense of excitement in the virtuosic runs in the final Alleluja.
The second half of the concert concentrated on an absolute masterpiece of the choral repertoire: Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. Special mention must be made of the young soloists Francesca H-C, who sang with crystalline beauty “Pie Jesu” and Alex P who also performed two substantial solos in “Offertoire” and “Libera Me”. Other notable student participation was in the orchestra, including Anthony T and Elle X on the violin, Ailsa M on bassoon, Scott H on clarinet and Christopher W on cello.
The evening was a wonderful celebration of vocal music and a great way to bring the musical activities of the term to an end. A final and special mention must be made for Helen Pervez, who not only conducted the orchestra and rehearsed the choir, but also spent considerable time organising the event and making sure that it ran perfectly.
We are now looking forward to all the music making for the next term!
