College Through to Schools' Challenge National Final
On Thursday 1st February, a College team comprising Dougal P (Captain), Matt B, Luke F and Jonah B-C, travelled to The Leys School to play the winners of The Leys versus Felsted East Anglian quarter final match in the Schools Challenge 2018. This is a general knowledge contest on a par with University Challenge, for secondary schools throughout the UK.
Felsted appeared completely in control of this contest and established a lead of nearly two hundred points at the half way stage. The Leys, however, staged an incredible comeback and led for the first time with only thirty seconds to go. Running out winners by 480 – 460 points, the College knew who their opponents were in the regional semi-final.
A slow start by the College saw the opposition open up a ninety point lead after five minutes when finally the College team registered a score. After ten minutes The Leys still had a 60 point lead and by twenty minutes this had extended to eighty points! The College side, however, responded, earning themselves a couple of bonuses to close the gap. The College side performed particularly strongly in the final five minutes and took the lead with four minutes to go. Putting pressure on the opponents with some fast fingers on the buzzer, the College side extended this lead and were victorious by 450 points to The Leys’ 370.
Congratulations to all four members of the College side who have now reached the East Anglian Regional Final for the first time in several years. BSC will host this contest later on in the term.
