To celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Poetry and Prose’ for LGBT+ History Month, and to encourage further inclusivity at the College, Senior School Diversity Ambassadors visited all Senior School Houses to speak to the 4th and 5th Forms about an activity called ‘Queering Cinderella’.
The activity, which focuses on queering a story, involves challenging the messages of heteronormativity and cisnormativity in traditional stories such as fairy tales to promote a more inclusive message. Focussing on the story of Cinderella, pupils were given multiple choices, which had been voted for beforehand, to help them decide how they would like their version of the tale to be reworked. Choices included the sexuality and gender of the main character, style and aspirations of the protagonist and also their relationships with others.
With the thought-provoking discussions in the Houses being very open and non-discriminative, pupils were able to ask the Diversity Ambassadors any questions they had concerning the activity and LGBT+ History. The discussions, which proved very fruitful, also led onto other topics including gender-neutral toilets.
