Teams Speak for Success in Rotary Competition

Youth speaks senior winners 2019

On Monday 25th November, two College teams took part in the intermediate and senior sections of the annual Rotary Youth Speaks Competition in the FLT, debating a topic of their choice.  The intermediate team was made up of Jake A (chairperson), Rebecca T (main speaker) and Thea C (vote of thanks) and the senior team included Caspar S (chairperson), Freddie C (main speaker) and Elizabeth K (vote of thanks).

Both teams spent weeks researching their chosen topic and then writing their speeches and preparing for possible questions. The intermediate team chose to speak on 'text speak' and whether it is a new language for a new generation. They were articulate, polished and commanded the FLT and the audience throughout. Our senior team opted for the very topical subject of Extinction Rebellion and whether they had gone a step too far in their actions. Once again, their performances were first-class and the audience was left in no doubt as to why they had chosen this topic, given the passion and enthusiasm with which they spoke.

The judges had a difficult task choosing a winner but, in the end, our intermediate team came second and the senior won their competition, meaning they will go through to the regional finals in Chelmsford next term.

Congratulations to both teams on fabulous performances!
